Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Adidas has announced the closure of its Austrian subsidiary Runtastic, a sports app developer. Approximately 170 employees in Pasching, Salzburg and Vienna will be affected by the layoffs.
The jobs will be phased out by mid-2025. This closure follows an earlier reduction of 70 positions and the discontinuation of the "adidas Training" app, see Runtastic-2023-AT.
Founded in 2009 and acquired by Adidas in 2015 for €220 million, Runtastic developed popular fitness apps, including the "adidas Running" app, which will now be managed from Adidas' central hubs in Herzogenaurach, Amsterdam and Zaragoza. Employees will have the opportunity to apply for roles in these locations as Adidas looks to consolidate its digital expertise in fewer locations.
