Description

The Hungarian state postal services company, Magyar Posta, decided to close 90-100 of its local post offices, according to the postal workers' union. The company has not issued a statement about the downsizing and the union has no precise information about the number of post offices and employees affected.

Based on communications from employees, most of the affected offices are located in villages with populations less than 1,500 but at least one office in Budapest will also be closed.

Several days after the revelation by the postal workers' union, the communication department of the company responded to the inquiry by a newspaper. It confirmed that a cutback was underway but did not provide additional information about the number of employees involved in the layoff. The firm emphasises that the present number of local post offices significantly surpasses the legal requirement. To reduce costs, the company wants to expand its partner programme, under which local stores, bank branches and food service venues take over some basic postal services
