Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 2 January 2024, the German bakery chain Lila Bäcker is cutting approximately 500 jobs due to internal restructuring.
In October 2023, Lila Bäcker filed for insolvency. However, the last possible investor retreated in December 2023. As a consequence, Lila Bäcker, who is facing tough market conditions with rising energy and resource costs, is closing a third of its branches and dismissing approximately 500 employees. According to the company, Lila Bäcker regrets the dismissal of its employees, and emphasises that this step is being taken to make the company competitive again.
As of now, Lila Bäcker has 1,100 employees and 160 branches in Germany.
