Description

Dutch steel manufacturer Tata Steel is to cut 800 jobs in IJmuiden.

The jobs to be cut consist of 500 workers in staff, management, and support functions, as well as 300 hired workers and vacancies that will not be filled. How and why this internal restructuring is happening has not been communicated.

The Tata Steel location is part of Tata Steel Netherlands, which is a subsidiary of the Indian Tata Group. The British Tata Steel company announced in September that it would cut 3000 jobs because of sustainability plans, which require fewer workers. Tata Steel IJmuiden says the job reductions were necessary regardless of any sustainability plans.

UPDATE: 14/03/2024

Tata Steel will be cutting fewer jobs than initially announced, with 581 positions set to be eliminated instead of the previously announced 800. This reduction in jobs also means that there will be no forced layoffs, according to the company.

The reorganisation primarily targets office roles, affecting both permanent employees and contracted workers. The revision of an outsourcing plan has contributed to lowering the number of jobs being cut.

Trade union FNV is satisfied with these adjustments. Workers in shift operations and those with technical backgrounds will be unaffected by the reorganisation.
