Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Tine, Norway's largest producer and distributor of dairy products, has announced that 100 jobs will be cut in a restructuring process affecting several dairy processing plants. The plants at Sem in Tønsberg and in Kristiansand will be closed, while a restructuring of the production will also affect employment at the plants at Ringebu, Sola and Lom.
The company states that the goal is to increase competitiveness as it is facing increased import competition, and that milk sales have declined by 40 percent over the past 10 years. The production changes will be implemented from 2024 and the plants in Tønsberg and Kristiansand will be closed in 2025.
Trade union NNN describes the announcement as "shocking" for the affected employees, although a restructuring has been expected for some time. The trade union will be involved in the upcoming restructuring process and the company states that it will "work to find good future solutions together with individual employees, within or outside Tine".
