Innovia, part of the Canedian-Americal CCL group and an international producer of plastic packing goods for food and tobacco industry has announced it will close its facility in Merelbeke. All 124 employees are at risk of losing their job, 36 white and 88 blue collar workers.
The news were announced at a special works council and came as a surprise to employees and trade unions. The latter are now consulting their members and discussing with the company management to establish the next steps. The union president noticed that investments were made in the branch in Great Britain, while the outdated machines in Merelbeke were not replaced and he thinks that the production will be moved to UK
