Description

The Swedish mining company Boliden has given a notice of termination to 190 of its employees at the Rönnskär copper smelter in Skellefteå. The job cuts are a result of a large fire that started at the plant on the 13 June. The commercial business model of the company has been affected after adjustments had to be made in the copper production as a result of the fire. Several of the plants may also have to run on limited capacity due to the effects of the fire. According to Boliden, cooperation negotiations will start immediately.

According to an employee and the chairman of the largest of the local trade unions, IF Metall, staff reactions range from composure to deep concern. It is also stated that the final number of job losses has not yet been determined. The employees at the plant are represented by four different trade unions. The notice period for all affected employees is six months, meaning that redundancies may not occur until the end of the year. Due to this, the end date of this internal restructuring is currently unknown.
