Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Maxima, the largest Lithuanian supermarket chain, is looking for about 500 additional employees as the summer season starts. Currently the search for employees is mainly concentrated in the Baltic Sea resorts of Palanga, Šventoji, Nida, as well as in the lake regions of Ignalina and Moletai, where during the summer period business increases significantly. Most jobs will be in shops: cashiers, sales clerks, shop floor workers, and loaders. In the larger stores of the chain, the food production teams will also be strengthened: cooks and kitchen assistants are sought, while the logistics departments are looking for order pickers and reception staff. According to the company's representatives, even workers with no or limited experience will be recruited with the company committing to provide all the other necessary tools and knowledge for the worker. As incentives to prospective employees, the company is offering free accommodation, some free meals, monthly bonuses and a comfortable work schedule as well as further career opportunities. After the summer season, the company indicates it will be providing opportunities for workers recruited to move to other Maxima outlets as well as for example combining work with studies.
