Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The paper producer Mondi Neusiedler, an industrial company in the Mostviertel region in Lower Austria, has registered 160 of 700 employees with the Public Employment Service due to internal restructuring measurements. Both sites in Lower Austria, Ulmerfeld-Hausmening and Kematen are affected. The company has developed a new product portfolio, focusing on the production of luxury packaging, graphic printing and on paper for technical applications among others. In exchange, the previous focus on high-quality office and printing paper will be scaled back, which is why the paper machine 6 (PM6), operation since 1982, will be shut down.
Talks for social plans for affected employees with the works council were initiated. The restructuring aims at improving the company's performance and is in line with it's sustainability commitments under MAP2030, which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The mayor Christian Haberhauer emphazised that the company is an important employer and partner for Amstetten and the region, and he was assured of an social plan for the employees affected.
