Description
The electrical equipment manufacturer General Electric has announced its decision to lay off 199 employees in Spain and to initiate a redundancy programme (ERE) affecting several work centres, in particular those located in Catalonia and Castilla La Mancha. The company argues the need to adjust its workforce within a framework of global restructuring of its activities worldwide, including its facilities in Spain.
Trade unions have rejected the proposed measure, while urging the company to opt for less traumatic and temporary measures measures (e.g. a PERTE) that would guarantee the level of employment and activity, particularly in the current context of boosting demand for renewable energy production and the moderation in cost increases in recent months. The unions have called a strike to protest against these measures.
