Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ikea Romania, a subsidiary of the Swedish group Ikea, announced the opening its third store in Romania by summer 2023, thereby creating jobs for 250 workers. The construction of the third store started in September 2021 and it was predicted to end in 12 months. The store's management team was recruited in April 2022 and followed company’s gender equality principles, with 50% women and 50% men in management positions.
The specialists and experts in the logistics department, department managers and team leaders joined the team, and mass recruitment for the remaining vacancies began at the end of September: customer service, cashiers, maintenance, etc. Even though the salaries are tempting and are opportunities for professional and personal growth, ensuring equal opportunities in terms of recruitment and employee development, the company is facing a shortage of unskilled workers, which has also led to delays in the store opening.
As of January 2023, the company has 50 persons hired at Timisoara store.
Ikea entered the Romanian market in 2007 by opening its first store in Bucharest. The second store was open in 2019, also in Bucharest.
