Description
E-commerce platform Shopee is withdrawing from its operations in Poland, the brand's social media stated on 12.01.2023. The Polish branch of Shopee employed around 300 people, who will lose their jobs on 13.01.2023.
As of September 2022, the platform had already laid off some employees and closed operations in Chile, Colombia and Mexico, as well as Argentina. Shopee also exited the Indian and French markets in 2022. Mediapanel Gemius Poland data shows that in November 2022, Shopee's number of users in Poland reached 10.8 million, giving the Asian platform the third position in the e-commerce platform category. The decision to close the Polish branch was explained by the head of Shopee's Polish branch, Ian Ho, as a result of uncertainty in the external business environment across the company, including inflation.
Shopee launched its operations in 2015 in Southeast Asia and in Taiwan, and has decided to enter other global markets in 2019. Shopee is owned by Singapore's Sea Limited. The Polish branch of Shopee's shopping platform was launched in September 2021.
