Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hornonitrianske Bane Prievidza (HBP) announced 134 lay offs at its mining site Čáry in Trnava region. This comes due to adverse geological conditions in gallery Gbely III. These conditions have had negative implications for the safety of miners.
HBP is a Slovak mining company that focuses solely on extracting lignite. It has a 113 year tradition in Slovakia and it is a major employer in the western regions of Slovakia. It operates from the industrial town of Prievidza in western Slovakia, Trenčín region, operating galleries – mining sites in various locations across western Slovakia.
Redundancies will affect miners. The company offers severance packages and requalification courses.
The company has been steadily laying off employees, which has been a move in line with the government's long-term programme to dismiss lignite (brown coal) mining in Slovakia by the end of 2023. It plans to lay off an additional 1,000 employees by the end of 2023,.
