Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Beaulieu, a Belgian multinational producer of floor coverings and other related chemical products has announced it will close its facility of tufted carpets in Wielsbeke and 174 employees will lose their jobs. At risk of losing their jobs are 133 blue collar and 41 white collar employees. According to the company management, the measure is necessary due to rising energy prices, outdated machinery and a general falling demand for tufted carpet.
The trade unions at the company state that employees were surprised by the news. They were under the impression that the market for tufted carpets was large enough to maintain the production.
