Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Carl Hansen & Søn, a Danish luxury furniture manufacturer, has announced 140 job cuts which will impact skilled and unskilled employees across the company. In particular, employees at the factory in Gelsted will experience the highest proportion of the job cuts. The company's CEO has cited the decline in demand from their Northern European markets, inflated costs pressures in the supply chain and rising energy costs as factors contributing to the decision to reduce their workforce. While they believe turnover will remain as predicted for 2023, their will be a significant loss in profit.
Carl Hansen & Søn have previously had to reduce their workforce in 2022. This puts total dismissals within the year of 2022 at 197.
In operation since 1908, Carl Hansen & Søn is a Danish luxury furniture manufacturer from the island of Funen.
