Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
MAN Truck & Bus, a German bus manufacturer, announced its restructuring plan to lay-off 860 positions at its Starachowice production plant in Poland. The plant currently employs 3,500 workers, and the lay-offs will primarily concern operational positions. The company has pointed to high energy cost, war in Ukraine and low demand as main reasons for the restructuring.
Within 30 days of the announcement for each lay-off, trade unions will be able to negotiate further details on how the measure will be implemented. (Updated, 12/01/2023) The company announced that the process of lay-offs will be concluded by the end of June 2023.
MAN has been operating in Poland since 1996, it has three factories in the country (Niepołomice, Kraków and Starachowice), employing over 6,000 people across the country. The most recent business expansion investments created over 1,600 jobs in Niepołomice (MAN-2021-PL).
