Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The ferry line company Tallink Silja is planning lay-offs and has thus initiated negotiations for 265 employees. The negotiations cover the Swedish crew members but may affect also workforce in Finland. The announcement was made following the decision to rent out Tallink Silja Galaxy, a passenger ship operating between Stockholm, Sweden and Turku, Finland. The ship will be used as accommodation for Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands. Tallink Silja Galaxy is the fourth one of the company’s ships to be rented out for this purpose.
According to the company representative at Viking Line, there is not sufficient need on the company’s other ships to employ the former staff of Tallink Silja Galaxy. Some of the ship’s technical staff may relocate to the Netherlands with the ship.
Tallink Silja has struggled economically following the drop in passengers due to the Covid-19 -pandemic and more recently the hike in fuel prices due to the war in Ukraine. The company underwent restructuring in both Sweden (Tallink Silja-2020-SE) and Finland (Tallink Silja-2020-FI) during 2020.
Tallink Silja operates in the Baltic Sea.
