Description
French railway manufacturer Alstom announced to cut between 900 and 1,300 jobs in Germany within the next three years, following its acquisition of Bombardier's rail unit.
Several German sites are affected by this step, such as Goerlitz and Bautzen in Saxony, Henningsdorf in Brandenburg and Salzgitter in Lower Saxony. Part of the production of trains will be moved abroad. Even if the company plans to reduce employee numbers at its manufacturing sites, it also wants to create 700 new jobs related to software, digital and engineering services in Germany (Braunschweig, Berlin and Mannheim). Overall, the company wants to restructure its business and invest into software and digital services. Alstom management took up negotiations with the company's works council in December 2021. Works' council as well as the Federal German Government want to safeguard as many jobs as possible.
