Nissan, the Japanese car manufacturer, has confirmed that it has started redundancy consultations as it plans to cut 157 office jobs at its Sunderland plant, in the north east of England. The proposed cuts include 12 managerial and 145 professional positions.
A representative of the company said that planned restructuring was a response to changing market conditions and aimed at ‘maximising efficiency.’
A representative of the trade union Unite said the union was invited to take part in the consultations.
Nissan employs 6,000 people at the Sunderland site, which is the largest car plant in the UK, producing over 440.000 cars a year.
