European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
German supermarket chain Lidl will create 1,200 jobs in Ireland in 2021. The roles will be across operational and office-based roles in stores, regional distribution centres and in the head office.
Lidl currently has 168 stores and three regional distribution centres in Ireland and employs 5,000 people. It intends to open six new branches during 2021 and to expand or rebuild seven existing stores. It will also expand its regional distribution centre in Mullingar.
Since March last year, Lidl has taken on 700 additional temporary and permanent employees in response to the Covid-19 pandemic which has meant that more staff are needed in stores in order to keep supply chains moving and also ensure Covid-19 health and safety measures are adhered to.
In December 2020 Lidl held 11.8% of the Irish grocery market and was the fastest-growing supermarket group in the country by market share.
Recognising the effort put in by its employees over the last year, the company has committed a further €2m bonus to be shared by staff in Ireland. This is the third such bonus of its kind since the pandemic began.
