European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Leeds City Council, the local authority of the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, has announced plans to cut 199 jobs. The planned redundancies are part of a cost saving programme to compensate for a shortfall of GBP 119 million (€131 million, as at 4 December 2020) in the Council’s budget.
The leader of the Council said the redundancies were inevitable, due to the effect of the COVID-19 crisis and the ‘national reductions to local government budgets'. The cost saving programme includes the closure of community centres and the reduction of childcare and social care services. The 199 job cuts are in addition to 600 redundancies announced earlier this year.
Leeds City Council is responsible for the provision of local authority services, such as education, transport and social services to 800,000 people living within its area. The Council is one of the largest employers in the Leeds city region, with a staff of 15,000.
