Description

Solent University, the British higher education institution based in Southampton, has confirmed plans to cut 109 jobs as part of a cost saving programme. The redundancy consultations with affected staff members and their representatives have already started.

A spokesperson for the university said the restructuring programme was in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and added that the university wanted to ‘retain a skilled and agile workforce'.

A representative of the trade union Unison criticised the restructuring programme which was announced at a time when staff were working exceptionally hard and called on the government to help universities overcome the crisis caused by the pandemic.

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across five academic schools, including its famous School of Maritime Science and Engineering, and has over 11,000 students.
