Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Motor manufacturer Opel has announced it will discontinue production at its 'powertrain' plant in Aspern, Vienna. The closure means that 270 employees to lose their jobs. The plant has produced motors for General Motors for 40 years and the the contract has now come to an end. The company spokesman, Christoph Stummvoll, states that there is no connection with the current COVID-19 crisis. The rest of the production remains active. Aspern is still an important site for the company. A redundancy programme has been prepared. Opel Wien GmbH is 99.5% owned by General Motors Europe Ltd.
