Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 29 October 2020, the IT company IBM will be cutting 2,300 jobs in Germany due to internal restructuring. This job reduction is part of a handful of measures to optimise and simplify processes within the company. Management is planning a voluntary programme until the end of the year to achieve its goal. The trade union Verdi fears that direct dismissals might follow if this goal will not be achieved by the end of 2020 and criticises the plan.
The job reduction is overshadowed by the company’s announcement to split up its operations. The CEO of the company intends to split the IT services to a separate company, while the other part of the company will focus on Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence.
IBM has 10,000 employees in Germany.
