Description

Norwegian Air, the Norway-based budget airline has announced plans to cut 259 pilot and cabin crew jobs, a quarter of its employees at its hub at London’s Gatwick Airport. The redundancy consultations with the affected staff and trade unions have already started.

A spokesperson for the company said that 'the unprecedented circumstances' caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions on international travel had made it necessary to carry out a review 'in line with current business needs'.

A representative of Balpa, the pilots’ union, said that the news was a serious blow for the Norwegian employees and called for government action to support the aviation sector, such as COVID-19 testing being introduced at UK airports to 'restore passenger confidence'.

Norwegian Air operates 27 routes from London Gatwick, to locations in Norway, Sweden, the Baltic States, and Poland. Currently, Norwegian Air counts 1,142 employees in London Gatwick.
