Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Anglo American, the British multinational mining company has announced that it will create 200 new jobs at its polyhalite mine in Whitby, North Yorkshire. The new jobs include surveyors, engineers, and skilled trades, as well as general construction roles.
The chief development officer of the new mine said the company aimed to provide work opportunities for local people, who will be involved in building 'the first new mine in the UK for a generation'. The mine is designed to blend into the landscape, and it will be used to extract polyhalite ore, a natural fertiliser, from a mile under the surface.
Anglo-American is a major producer of platinum, copper, nickel, iron ore, coal, and diamonds. It has operations across the globe, and it employs 90,000 people, with 2,000 working in Europe. When the site near Whitby is at full production, it will employ 1,000 people directly.
