Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German ceramics producer Villeroy & Boch announced that it plans to cut 200 jobs worldwide, including 100 positions in Germany. A company’s spokeperson revealed the administrative departments will be particularly affected. The conditions of the programme will be negotiated with the works councils as the dismissals should be ‘socially acceptable as possible’.
The job cuts are a part of ‘a comprehensive transformation and efficiency programme’ which was announced by the company in February 2020. The programme’s aim is to achieve sustainable competiveness in the digital age, and the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates the implementation of the programme.
Villeroy & Boch employs 7,500 people globally, including 1,900 in Saarland, Germany.
