Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of the Hexcel Reinforcements factory at Avenières (38) has announced the dismissal of 42 employees out of a total workforce of 400. The factory, which is specialised in carbon fibre weaving, is idling. On site, the 400 employees all experience between 4 and 8 days of short-time working per month. A 'collective performance' agreement that was signed between the management and the trade unions validates a reduction in bonuses and the 13th month. But 42 employees refused to see this agreement applied with the sacrifices demanded. They have been dismissed. 80% of the production of the Hexcel Roussillon and Avenières sites is destined for the aeronautics market. Both sites belong to the American group Hexcel (5,200 employees).
