Co-op Food, the British food retailer has announced that it will open 50 new stores and extend another 15 sites, creating 1,000 new jobs across the UK by the end of 2020. The extension of the store network is part of a GBP 130 million (€145 million as at 5 October) investment plan.

A representative of Co-op Food said the company was adding new locations in order to meet customers’ expectations for 'proximity shopping' while it was also developing its online shop.  There has been a surge in local grocery shopping since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.

Co-op Food, which has more than 2,600 food stores in the UK employing around 55,000 persons, is part of the Co-op Group,  the largest consumer co-operative in the UK. The Group runs a variety of businesses such as insurance, legal and funeral services.
