Description

Levy Restaurants UK, the British company that runs catering and hospitality services at the Scottish Levy Restaurants UK, has informed its casual workers at the Scottish Events Campus, a conference venue in Glasgow, that their jobs will be cut at the end of September. The trade union Unite said more than 500 workers will be affected, including 85 people working on fixed term contracts or as members of the core staff, however, the company did not confirm the exact figure.

A spokesperson for the company said that it had decided to 'remove casual workers from the furlough scheme' because there were no events planned at the Scottish Events Campus in the near future due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A representative of Unite said that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, running until the end of October, was 'an alternative to mass redundancy' and condemned the company's decision to cut jobs instead of contribute to the employees' pay.

Levy holds catering contracts with major sports and events venues including the All England Tennis Club (home of Wimbledon), Chelsea Football Club and the Scottish Events Campus.
