Description

ArcelorMIttal is the 6th largest employer in Luxembourg with 3.810 employees (2019) working at various production sites in Luxembourg. It has announced plans to cut 570 jobs in Luxembourg. In addition to commercial problems before the COVID-19 crisis, notably the challenge of low-cost imports from non-EU countries, demand for steel decreased with the COVID-19 crisis and the group has decided to cut costs. The two representative trade unions in the sector OGBL and LCGB emphasised that all instruments (early retirement schemes, internal mobility, training...) should be mobilised to avoid redundancies and keep both skills and competetences in Luxembourg. The trade union OGBL has requested sector tripartite negotiations between the trade unions, the government and the ArcelorMittal management.

At the time of writing, no social plan or other concrete measures have yet been defined and negotiations between the management and trade unions are ongoing.
