Description

Drax Power, the company running the power station at Selby in the north of England announced plans to cut 206 jobs by the end of March 2021, as the power station is due to stop using coal.

The trade unions representing the affected workers have initially agreed with the management on the redundancy plan, however, trade union Unite now disputes the measure of compulsory redundancies and its members are considering industrial action. A representative of Unite has accused management of acting in ‘bad faith’.

The Drax power station in Selby provides 5% of the UK's electricity. The decision to switch from using coal to biomass is part of a large decarbonisation project.
