Atkins, the British engineering and project management company has announced that it will cut 280 jobs in its infrastructure division across the UK.
A statement by the company said that the decision was a response to the reduced demand for the company’s services in the aviation and real estate markets in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to media sources, Atkins is contracted to work on projects at Birmingham and Heathrow Airports which have been suspended.
The trade union Prospect said the announcement was 'a blow' and criticised the company for not using the COVID-19 Job Retention Scheme instead of making employees redundant.
Atkins is part of the SNC- Lavalin Group, the global construction and engineering firm headquartered in Canada.
