Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Avara Foods, a UK-based poultry business, has announced plans to close its duck processing plant in Caistor, Lincolnshire, putting 300 jobs at risk of redundancy.
In its statement, the company said that the plant was not sustainable, as already challenging market conditions had been exacerbated by the uncertainty around Brexit and the drop-in sales since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
While consultation with the affected staff is underway, the management of the company ensured that they will provide the necessary support to everyone affected by the internal restructuring.
Avara Foods is one of the UK’s largest food businesses, supplying chicken, duck and turkey to supermarkets and restaurants. The duck processing plant in Caistor was acquired by the predecessor of Avara Foods five years ago.
